About Anna Blythe Lappé

A nna Lappé is a nationally recognized author and public speaker and a Food and Society Policy Fellow, a national program of the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

With her mother, Frances Moore Lappé, she is co-founder of the Small Planet Fund and a founding principal of the Small Planet Institute, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Her first book, the bestselling Hope's Edge: The Next Diet for a Small Planet (Tarcher/Penguin 2002) chronicles social movements on five continents addressing the root causes of hunger and poverty. Winner of the Nautilus Award for Social Change, Hope's Edge has been published in several languages and is used in classrooms across the country. She is currently at work on her second book, Grub: Ideas for an Urban, Organic Kitchen (Tarcher/Penguin 2006), with recipes by chef Bryant Terry and a foreword by Eric Schlosser (Fast Food Nation).

Since the publication of Hope's Edge, Anna has visited more than seventy cities sharing her unique perspective on food politics, globalization, and the media. She has guest lectured at dozens of universities, including Allegheny College, Boston University, Brown University, New York University, and Yale University. Anna's work has been featured in O: The Oprah Magazine, Vibe Magazine, Organic Style, Body & Soul, Natural Health, and Utne. She has appeared on dozens of radio programs, including National Public Radio's Weekend Edition, The Diane Rehm Show, and Talk to America.

Anna’s writing is widely published in the U.S. and Canada, appearing in The Washington Post, San Francisco Chronicle, Los Angeles Times, The International Herald Tribune, and The Globe and Mail, among others. She is a contributing author to a number of books, including Take Back Your Time (Berrett-Koehler 2003) and Feeding the Future: How the Battle Over Food Will Change Your Life (Realize Media 2004).

Anna serves as an advisor to non-profit and media organizations, including b-healthy!, Media that Matters-Canada, and Brown University's Swearer Center for Public Service. She is also a consultant to Sierra Club Productions on the documentary-version of Hope's Edge, to be directed by Academy-Award winner, Freida Lee Mock.

In 2002, Anna received Bioneers Youth Award given annually to a leading social activist by one of the country's foremost environmental organizations, the Collective Heritage Institute. In 2004, she was named to Organic Style’s Top 50 Environmental Power List. Anna holds an M.A. in Economic and Political Development from Columbia University's School of International and Public Affairs and graduated with honors from Brown University. She lives in Brooklyn, New York.
